Emergency Roof Repair Contractor in Tarzana, California

An emergency roof repair contractor in Tarzana, California stops active water or storm damage first (tarping, sealing a failed flashing, clearing a blocked drain), then traces the leak and schedules the permanent repair, with an LADBS permit when the work needs one. If water is coming through a ceiling or part of the roof is open, call NEMA Roofing at 818-528-6412, move what you can away from the leak, and stay off the roof.

What counts as a roof emergency?

• Water coming through a ceiling, light fixture or wall during or after rain.
• A section of shingles, tiles or membrane torn off or lifted by wind.
• A tree limb or debris through the roof.
• A ceiling that is sagging or bulging with water.
• Fire, impact or storm damage that leaves the deck exposed.

A stain that is dry, a few granules in the gutter or one cracked tile with no leak can usually wait for a scheduled repair. The test is whether water can get in before the next dry day.

What should you do in the first hour?

1. Stay safe. Do not climb onto a wet or windy roof. If water is near light fixtures or outlets, switch off that circuit at the panel.
2. Limit the damage inside. Move furniture and electronics, put down buckets and towels, and if a ceiling is bulging, make a small hole at its lowest point over a bucket so the water drains instead of bringing the ceiling down.
3. Document it. Take photos and video of the ceiling, the attic if you can reach it safely, and the roof from the ground. Your insurer will ask.
4. Call a licensed roofer. Give the address, what you see and where the water shows up.

A fuller checklist is in emergency roof leak steps.

What does an emergency roof crew do on arrival?

• Stabilize. A heavy tarp is run over the damaged area and past the ridge and fastened through wood battens so wind cannot lift it; small openings at flashing are sealed; drains and valleys are cleared so water can leave the roof.
• Trace the leak. Water travels along rafters and insulation before it shows on a ceiling, so the entry point is often uphill of the stain. Finding it is what makes the permanent repair stick.
• Record the condition. Photos of the damage and the temporary work support your insurance claim and the repair estimate.
• Scope the permanent repair. The estimate should name what will be replaced (covering, underlayment, deck, flashing) and whether a permit is needed.

For what each temporary fix can and cannot do, see temporary roof repair vs. permanent repair.

What Tarzana rules apply to the permanent repair?

Tarzana is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles, so building permits come from the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS). Three points shape the permanent work after an emergency:

• Reroof permits. LADBS issues reroofing as an Express Permit (no plan check) for Class A or B roof coverings under 6 pounds per square foot over solid sheathing.
• Fire zones. Parts of the Tarzana ZIP code 91356 lie in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, where LADBS requires a Class A roof covering.
• Cool roofs. If more than 50 percent of the roof ends up replaced, LADBS requires a Cool Roof Rating Council certified product on a home.

A storm that damages a large part of an older roof can therefore turn a repair into a replacement with product rules attached. Knowing that early keeps the insurance claim and the estimate aligned.

How do you choose an emergency roofing contractor after a storm?

• Check the license. Look up the contractor on the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) website before anyone starts. NEMA Roofing holds CSLB license #1083283.
• Get it in writing. California requires a written contract for home improvement work above a small threshold, caps the down payment at 10 percent of the price or a fixed dollar limit, whichever is less, and does not allow payments ahead of the work done.
• Be wary of door-to-door offers right after a storm, especially those asking for large payments up front or to sign over insurance proceeds on the spot.
• Ask what happens next: who comes back for the permanent repair, and how the temporary work is removed.

Does NEMA handle roof emergencies outside Tarzana?

Yes. NEMA Roofing has five locations, in Tarzana, Woodland Hills, Downey, Oxnard and Santa Barbara, and covers all of Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. In Ventura County the permit comes from the city (for example Oxnard or Ventura) or from the county outside city limits, and small-repair permit exemptions differ from place to place, so the permanent repair is scoped to the local rules.
