The metal roofing cost that Oxnard, California homeowners pay depends on six things: the panel system (standing seam or exposed-fastener panels), the metal and its coating (steel or aluminum, which matters near salt air), the finish, the roof’s size and complexity, tear-off of the old roof, and the flashing and trim the job needs. This page explains each driver so you can compare estimates line by line; it gives no prices, because installed metal prices change with material markets and every roof differs. What drives the cost of a metal roof in Oxnard?
| Cost driver | Why it moves the price |
|---|---|
| Panel system | Standing seam panels with concealed clips take more labor and trim than exposed-fastener (ribbed or corrugated) panels screwed through the face |
| Metal and coating | Aluminum costs more than coated steel but can be the better choice in salt spray (see below) |
| Finish | Paint systems differ in price and in how well they hold color and reflectance; compare the finish warranty terms |
| Roof size and shape | Priced by the square (100 square feet); hips, valleys, dormers and skylights add cutting and trim |
| Tear-off | Removing layers of shingles or heavy tile adds labor and disposal |
| Deck and underlayment | Damaged sheathing is replaced after tear-off; metal needs a suitable underlayment beneath |
| Flashing and trim | Ridge, eave, rake, wall and penetration trim are fabricated and fitted piece by piece |
Why does salt air matter so much in Oxnard?
Oxnard sits right on the coast, and salt spray attacks metal. The U.S. Department of Defense’s roofing criteria, which specify aluminum or aluminum-zinc coated (Galvalume) steel for metal roofs, note that Galvalume steel does not perform as well in direct contact with salt spray and gives a shorter service life in coastal applications, and that aluminum may be the better choice in some environments, at a higher cost. For a home within reach of ocean spray, ask each contractor which metal and coating they propose, and how far from the water the manufacturer’s paint and corrosion warranty terms apply. Fasteners and trim must be compatible with the panels, because dissimilar metals corrode where they touch.
Do Oxnard rules add cost?
- Permit. The City of Oxnard’s Building and Engineering Division issues reroof permits; a permit is required for repairs over 40 square feet and for any work that goes past the roof covering, so a metal reroof always needs one.
- Cool roof. Oxnard is in California building climate zone 6. The state’s steep-slope cool-roof rule does not apply there, so any color may be used on a sloped metal roof; a low-slope section replaced at more than half its area must meet the low-slope cool-roof values.
- Fire zones. Oxnard has no Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone within the city, though the state’s 2025 map shows some High and Moderate areas; check your address, since fire-zone rules can require a Class A roof assembly.
How do you compare metal roofing estimates?
- Confirm each estimate names the panel profile, metal type, thickness and finish.
- Check that tear-off, underlayment and all trim are listed, not “as needed.”
- Ask for deck repair as a unit price.
- Compare the paint and corrosion warranty terms for a coastal address.
- Check the contractor’s license on the CSLB website; NEMA Roofing holds CSLB license #1083283.
