Do old shingles have to be removed?

Building codes differ from city to city. Installing shingles over an existing roof can be done under certain conditions. Most codes allow you to put one layer over an original layer, for a total of two layers. Doing this adds approximately 225 pounds per square (10′ x 10′ area) to your roof deck.

It also compromises the life of the roof, because you have an old layer under a new one. In most cases, a repair can be made to temporarily stop additional damage to other areas of the property. It can be risky to make judgments based on expanding a roof life beyond what it was originally designed for. If a problem arises at the end of a roof’s life, it probably can be repaired.
