Green "Eco-Friendly" Roofing ## What makes a roof “green” in practice - **It stays cooler.** A cool-rated roof reflects more sunlight and releases heat faster, which lowers roof and attic temperatures on hot days and reduces the need for air conditioning (California Energy Commission). - **It lasts.** The longest-lived roof is usually the one with the lowest environmental cost per year of service. - **It can be recycled.** Metal roofing is readily recycled at the end of its life, and clay and concrete tile can often be reused on the same house. - **It carries the solar.** A roof replaced before panels go on avoids removing and reinstalling the panels a few years later. Image for post 28097 ## Cool roofs: the measurable part of green roofing California rates roofing products by two numbers, both measured from 0 to 1: solar reflectance (how much sunlight the surface reflects) and thermal emittance (how readily it gives off the heat it absorbs). Only values from the Cool Roof Rating Council’s directory count toward the state’s Energy Code, and cool products come in tile, metal, asphalt shingle and coatings, in light and in darker colors. Whether a cool roof is required depends on where the house is. Under the 2025 Energy Code, in force since January 1, 2026, a sloped re-roof on a house in climate zones 4 and 8 through 15 must have an aged solar reflectance of at least 0.20 and a thermal emittance of at least 0.75 (or a solar reflectance index of 16) unless an exception applies, and a low-slope re-roof in zones 4 and 6 through 15 must reach 0.63 and 0.75 (or an index of 75). Before panels go on, it pays to check three things: 1. **Remaining life of the roof.** If the covering or underlayment is near the end, replace it first. 2. **Where the mounts go.** Every mount is a penetration that has to be flashed; on standing-seam metal, clamps on the seams avoid penetrations altogether. 3. **Wiring and access paths.** Leave room to reach vents, chimneys and the parts of the roof that will need maintenance. Planning the re-roof and the panels as one project means the roof under the panels starts its life when they do, and nobody pays twice to get at the same roof. Image for post 28122 ## Vegetated “green roofs” A vegetated roof (soil and plants over a waterproof membrane) is what many people picture when they hear “green roof”. It holds rainwater and insulates, but it is heavy when saturated, needs a root-resistant membrane and a structure designed for the load, and is mostly built on commercial and multifamily roofs. For most houses here, a cool, long-lived roof with solar does more for the same money. ## Eco-friendly roofing questions ### Is a white roof always the greenest choice? Not always. On a flat roof in a warm climate zone, a highly reflective surface is usually the best choice. On a sloped roof, a cool-rated product in a mid tone can meet the code while suiting the house, and in the coastal zone 6 the steep-slope rule does not apply at all. ### Does restoring a roof count as green? Yes, when the roof is sound.
